Sexual Crimes in Thailand
|
Background
Thailand has strict laws concerning rape, sexual assault and sex with minors. The specific laws concerning sexual offenses are found in Chapter Nine of the Penal Code. The statutory age of consent in Thailand is age fifteen. There are additional laws that prohibit taking a minor who is over 15 years of age, away from their home to engage in illicit activities. Sexual offenses may also include computer offenses that involve illegal pornography.
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) also conduct investigations in cooperation with the Thailand police, to locate, arrest and prosecute sex offenders. These NGOs normally focus on underage sex violations. Foreign governments, especially the USA, also have laws that make sexual offenses outside of the United States, criminal offenses under US law. As, a result, investigations of sex offenses may also involve US authorities.
