Background
Written contracts are used in a wide variety of business and financial transactions in Thailand. In Thailand's courts, however, all English contracts need to be translated into the Thai language. Nevertheless, many contracts are negotiated in the English language as well as the Thai language. Further, many agreements involving foreign parties usually include two versions, one for the English language and one for the Thai language.
The custom in Thailand business transactions normally involves a more ritualized signature process than in other nations. Traditionally, signatures of contractual parties require two witnesses, and, for certain contracts, signatures of parties are required on each page of the agreement. Contracts such as joint ventures between larger companies, often have a "signing ceremony" where photos are taken.
